Odyssey: April Raine or Shine

I want to see the world. I want to meet new people. I want to hear their stories. I want to live — really live. I want to feel free. I want to wander around new streets, seek exotic adventures, journey to foreign places, explore the Earth.

… Alright! Come see the world with me:

Wanderlust

I want to see the world, but how?

With work, bills, schedules and everyday tasks, how am I suppose to find the time and money to travel? It’s funny: I went to school to get a job so I could afford to travel; but now, because scheduling time off from work is troublesome and because I owe tens of thousands of dollars in student loans, I rarely get the chance to travel. I feel stuck, and I am not the only one.

Adventure

This is why I want to keep traveling:

Life is too short not to see, feel, experience everything you possibly can fit into a day. I want to make the most of my time in this world. I don’t want to wait or put it off until I feel more established or settled. I want to adventure out into the unknown now, while I can.

In my previous post, I begged the question: but how? Life is always throwing obstacles in my way. The first obstacle I am working to overcome is my job. Obviously everyone needs to work, and honestly I like the work I do. I just need more freedom to do the work not in the same building and office everyday. I need to be able to do my work on-the-go.

I can do amazing things from a train, plane, hotel room, coffee shop etc. So what jobs will allow me to continue to enhance my career, and also allow me to work from around the world.

I am scouring the web for potential jobs I can do from on the go. So far, I have seen a plethora of writing and digital content jobs that are on board with the type of flexibility I am looking for.

Job searching and applying is always tough, but it’s worth the work to reach my dreams.

Journey

Experiences worth the journey: I have been able to travel some through the last few years.

Mostly my roommate/best friend and I have taken adventure cruises together. Alivia and I have been friends and roommates for the last 10 years, and I will say, finding a good travel partner is key to having a positive, fun journey.

Alivia and I have a deal when it comes to cruising: One person buys the cruise, the other matches the price of the cruise with excursions, parking fees, additional cruise packages (we maybe did the booze package once), and spending money at the ports.

Here’s what that looks like:

Alivia and I chose to take a 7 day cruise last year that went to Costa Maya, Belize, Honduras, and Cozumel. I bought both tickets, which if I remember correctly, cost me between $1,300 and $1,400.

Alivia then bought excursions for every stop, the parking and the gratuities owed at the end of the cruise. (Gratuities tripped us up on our first cruise. If you have never taken a cruise, the cruise line expects you to pay a tip at the end that goes to housekeeping, waiting staff, etc. You’ll want to make sure you have money left over to pay for this.)

I love booking our trips this way. Alivia and I have been able to, not only go to some amazing places, but also do some amazing things there. On this last trip we climbed a Mayan Pyramid, we walked through an ancient Mayan city, we floated through under water caves called cenotes, we saw bats, we saw ancient Mayan pottery at old ritual sites, we went tubing down a beautiful lagoon, we took amazing pictures, we swam with dolphins, we met amazing people and the list goes on.

The key to having an amazing journey is to go. You just have to go — find your way. So much of the experience that made everything worth it, was the time I spent with my best friend getting there. Booking the trip and excursions together, road tripping to the port, spending the night on the ship, eating and eating and eating and drinking, hiking through the woods to get to the excursions, meeting new people — all of that is what made the entire vacation a true journey.

Explore

There’s so much more out there. I can’t stop now.

Most of travels so far have been limited to the Caribbean and Central America. I have to Europe once. My future travel goals include the Mediterranean, more of Europe and some Pacific Islands.

About me… Free Writing:

undefined My name is April. Obviously if you’re reading this, you already know I love to travel and my goals for the future involve living a balanced life that allows for more adventure and freedom.

A couple things about me you don’t know: I am obsessive about my coffee. I LOVE the beach and long beach walks — like 5 to 10 mile beach walks. I like working out, and I take a variety of workout classes to mix things up, but my favorite classes are power yoga classes. I love to write, and I love grammar. I am pretty good with computers and learning computer software – I just recently taught myself HTML and CSS. I love learning in general, and I am constantly picking up new projects and books to learn something new. I hate quitting (to a flaw). I will sit for hours, determined to finished a project because I can’t just give up – even if it’s time to let it go (I’m working on this part #selfimprovement). I also love animals, being outside, gardens, sparkling water, fake eyelashes, high heels, tennis shoes, tan lines, essential oils, girls nights and movies. I think that covers everything.
